Ralph Lauren was born in 1939, in the Bronx district of New York, into a family of Jewish immigrants fromBelarus. He attendedDeWittClintonHigh School, where he graduated in 1957, and then attendedBraunchCollegeto study business, but never graduated. After this he spent two years in the US Army, between 1962 and 1964. He never attended any kind of fashion school, but after the army he began working at Brooks Brothers, a clothing company as a salesman.
During his time at high school, he was known by his classmates for selling ties. This proved to be the inspiration for his first business venture, as he opened a necktie store under the label Polo. The famous Polo Ralph Lauren logo first appeared in 1970, on Lauren's collection of women's business suits. In 1972, Lauren released a range of polo shirts, available in 24 different colours. This range became massively popular and is still an important part of the brand today.
In 1981, Polo Ralph Lauren became an international business. It opened its first store outside of theUSAonNew Bond Street,London. As of 2009 there were over 320 Ralph Lauren stores across the globe. The company's main flagship store is onMadison Avenue,New York. The company also has flagship stores inChicago,Miami,LondonandTokyo. This worldwide presence has led to Polo Ralph Lauren being one of the largest retailers in theUS, with revenues reaching $4.2 billion in 2007.
The Polo Ralph Lauren brand has branched out into numerous areas of fashion. The company now sells men's clothing, women's clothing, baby clothes, sportswear, home furnishings, denim, fragrances and sunglasses.
Polo Ralph Lauren has a rich heritage in the sporting world. It is the official outfitter ofWimbledonand of the US Open in 2008, which saw all match officials wearing the famous brand. The company sponsors famous golfers Tom Watson, Davis Love III and current World Number One Luke Donald.
