The first thing that you'll need to be able to do when you get involved with sewing (and many other areas of haberdashery, actually) is to ensure that you're able to thread a needled. Now this is a skill that takes time to learn – as most skills do – and requires a fairly steady hand. Fortunately, you'll be pleased to know that unless you have a legitimate medical condition, it is something that can be improved over time. So keep at your threading, and you'll soon be able to do so fairly quickly and without the worry that you'll initially experience!
Another thing we'd definitely recommend when you're looking to explore this particular area of haberdashery is to ensure that you take the time to learn about the wide variety of vocabulary that is naturally involved in this particular hobby. Just as anyone learning guitar would have to learn frets, pickups, scale lengths and the like, so you'll have to start learning the ways of FO, OTN, USO, DH, KIV and all the rest of them. Don't worry, though! There are plenty of resources online that will mean with a few weeks revising you'll be completely ready to go, and won't get confused whenever you pick up a sewing magazine!
Learn about fusible options. Whilst it might sound like something that is more to do with engineering than sewing, fusible options are actually a big part of the haberdashery world. This process involves ‘sewing', as such, but without actually using needles, thread etc. Instead, fusible options mean that two pieces of textiles are connected together using a type of glue that is designed specially for the purpose. This is a great way for you to mend any tears that occur, whatever type of stitching you're currently working with – it's a great skill to learn in the long term.
Learn the basics first: mending and repairs. Even if you're not necessarily aiming to recreate the Bayeux tapestry, learning to conduct basic sewing repairs is a really great life skill to learn. If you don't believe us, picture the following situation: the night before your big interview, the leg on your favourite suit gets a popped seam and is showing at least a square inch of leg: enough for anyone to notice. Now does sewing seem like such a bad idea? Not if it will fix the hole and get you the job it doesn't! Learn the basics and you'll be far better off.
Tool up with the basics. Whilst it's not an expensive hobby to take up (it pales in comparison to learning an instrument, for instance), it's important to make sure that when you want to take up sewing and haberdashery that you take the time to invest in the right kit at the beginning: otherwise you'll definitely struggle. Generally speaking, the bare minimum is as follows: a good pair of sewing scissors, needles, thread and tapestry itself are normally enough to get started. So get out there and buy them. More importantly, happy sewing!
