How to be prepared for any costume and fancy-dress party

We all love to party. Be it out at the club or at your very own house, you've probably been there, done that. The prep that goes into such an event is monotonously simple - curl your hair, slap on makeup, wear something short and sparkly, slip on five-inch heels. Of course, this gets dull and boring after some time. So, why not try organising or attending a costume party for a change? The idea is brilliant but the biggest problem lies in the question: What am I going to wear?! Calm down, ladies – you can solve your costume party woes with a few tips on staying prepared.

- BUY YOURSELF A LITTLE BLACK DRESS
They say that every woman's best friend is a diamond. That is not true; every woman's best friend is, in fact, a little black dress. With something so versatile, you can create many different costumes. The trick lies in the accessories.

- SHOES, SHOES, SHOES
When it comes to outfits, shoes can really be the break-it-or-make-it element. You already have your new dress, complemented perfectly by accessories, but one misstep in the footwear department can instantly kill your whole look. The easiest way to solve this complication is to keep a pair of neutral coloured heels and perhaps some heeled boots on hand at all times. They really do go with everything.

- START A COSTUME BOX
If you love going to costume parties on a regular basis, you wouldn't be able to live without what we call a costume box. The items that go into such a box include headpieces, masks, capes, and other such accessories that you can pair with your outfit. These usually can be picked up at costume stores or cheaply online.

- GET CRAFTY
Arts and crafts play a big, big role in getting ready for costume parties. Especially if you don't wish to spend a fortune on accessories, do-it-yourself crafts can come in very handy indeed. Fashion magazines and the internet are flooded with ideas on how to turn your everyday accessories into to-die-for treasures.

- LEARN NEW MAKEUP SKILLS
The final touch to your costume would undoubtedly be your makeup. The myriad of makeup styles out there may perplex and scare you but once you get the hang of it all, you will soon realise that they're made up of the same makeup tools, just with different application styles. For this part of your costume, YouTube is your bible.
