Cowboy boots are a part of the imagination of everyone in the western world
and, as such, have forever been a part of fashion as well. There are few
fashion items that we can say that will never go out of fashion, and cowboy
boots are one of them. This is because, more than what the fashion critics
say and what celebrities wear, fashion is about what people wear and about
what people like, and there are and always will be people who find *cowboy
boots* to be pretty, practical and, why not say it, sexy as well.
It's interesting to look back and see why cowboy boots are shaped and
designed the way they are, because it takes us back to the roots of our own
recent history. There have always been riding boots, and even now people who
work with horses wear riding boots that are very similar to the cowboy boots
that you see in the stores as a fashion item. These are, of course, designed
with practicality in mind more so than style.
Cowboy boots always share the same basic characteristics. They are tall
boots with no laces, with a round front, flat sole and a short heel, even
for men. This may sound like another set of fashion rules, but the truth is
they're grounded in practical reasons. Cowboy boots were working boots, much
like jeans were working pants, and as such they needed to serve a purpose.
They are designed to give the rider as much comfort and safety as possible
while riding a horse. The round toe and the smoothness of the sole make it
easier to slip the boot in and out of the stirrups. The heel also serves the
purpose of helping to keep the foot in the stirrup and stop it from sliding
forward. The lack of laces is also a safety feature: laces could get caught
in the saddle or the stirrup and would be a risk is the rider fell off the
horse. So a cowboy boot was designed as a comfortable shoe that fit the
stirrup well and could easily be removed, either off the stirrup or straight
off the foot in case something went wrong with the horse. The best aspect of
all of this is that these rules made it to modern day designer cowboy boots,
making us wonder if they would still serve their practical purpose well if
you were to ride with them.
