New Trend: Celebrating Your Wedding a Second Time

-We seem to be witnessing a new trend in the wedding industry which is great for the wedding industry - many couples now want to celebrate their wedding a second time. This usually applies to couples who have been legally married (at the Standesamt) but who have not had a bigger/ elaborate wedding reception or church wedding.  I noticed this among a few couples in my circle of friends and have had it confirmed through the many couples I come in contact with. It fascinates me and so I asked around : "Why the impulse to celebrate your wedding again?"

While there was some differing responses, many were a variation on these four themes:

1. Missed the feeling of ceremony: Whether religious or not, many couples felt that their legal marriage did not give them enough of a sense of ceremony and tradition. This is not to be confused with the feeling of having missed out on a celebration - although the two often go hand in hand. Even people who would not describe themselves as religiously active felt like celebrating a marriage in the church or having a religious figure officiate a ceremony leant some weight to the tradition of marriage. Many of the couples I spoke with struggled with the idea of how to have a beautiful and meaningful ceremony without doing the wedding in a church.

2. Missed the feeling of celebration: This taps into the trend of weddings as the last big private party. Many couples are marrying now at a later age, and have more money to spend on a wedding reception. People are willing and eager to organize a beautiful celebration for themselves and their friends.

3. Missed getting to wear the big white dress: This is something I have heard from a number of brides who were married at the standesamt - they want to be a princess for a day. That is for me absolutely understandable. Most women have been raised with this image of the big white wedding dress in their minds connected to marriage from a very young age. It's hard to give up that fairytale.

4. Wanted to re-confirm their love for each other. This is a beautiful reason, but in my opinion still somehow connected to the three ‘missed' elements above.

I think this is a great trend, and will inspire people to celebrate with true authenticity and style.
