You have your wardrobe prepared, your shoes all ready, and your jewelry picked out. What's left? The perfect bag! You may have tons to choose from and change each day, or you may be searching for just that one, perfect bag that will be suitable to bring to the office daily. A designer inspired handbag is just the thing. Choosing the right one is the next step.
First of all, you need space. With the era of nine to five over, and most work days looking more like eight to six, if not longer, you'll need to bring quite a few accoutrements to get you through the day. At the same time, you don't want it to be too large to carry or to look bulky and overwhelming. A slim tote is an excellent choice, or a large bowler. If you bring your gym clothes to work, pick a large tote in a dark color with many pouches to organize all of your different things.
A neutral color is always the best way to go, unless you work in an artsy environment or somewhere especially casual. Most women prefer black, but brown or beige can be equally neutral and somewhat more interesting, especially in different seasons. As a handbag retailer, you of course know that you need to carry more neutrals than anything else, even if colors seem appealing.
Neutral colors don't have to mean a boring bag. If you're the type that goes for classic, you can get a sturdy bag with basic features that will last a long time. If you like to change every so often, each season brings with it great, new styling including hardware, flaps, pockets and overall design. Be sure to stock plenty of different version of the basic colors – don't assume one or two or even five black bags are enough. You need to give your customers lots of options. There are really never enough black bags.
If you like color, the world is open to you. Try to shy away from bright or neon for a work environment, but pale shades or very dark shades work fine. As a rule, the brighter the color, the fewer accents it should have in order to stay tasteful.
Whichever handbag you choose, it should be strong enough to handle every day wear and tear. Leave the evening bags for the evening, and funky shapes for the mall.
